Sharks Players Bring Joy and Community Spirit to Festive Charity Event
On a vibrant Wednesday morning, the Westville SUPERSPAR became a whirl of excitement as Sharks rugby stars took part in an exhilarating Trolley Dash for Charity. This festive event, organized by SPAR, allowed the players to race through the grocery aisles in a timed challenge while collecting essential items to support The Robin Hood Foundation and the Gozololo Centre for Children. With each player allocated just two minutes to fill their shopping trolley, the event captured both the thrill of competition and the heartwarming spirit of giving back.
Supporting Local Charities: A Meaningful Impact
The two local charities chosen for this initiative focus on aiding vulnerable populations within KwaZulu-Natal. The Robin Hood Foundation aims to provide support for mothers, children, and the elderly, while the Gozololo Centre caters to traumatized and orphaned children through its various facilities in KwaMashu, Umgababa, and Bhambayi. Sharks players Siya Masuku and Vincent Koch led the charge with thoughtful selections that included necessities such as food parcels and baby-care packs. Following them, Aphelele Fassi and Bradley Davids ensured a festive touch by loading their trolleys with sweet treats in anticipation of the holiday season.
Reflecting on the day, fullback Fassi expressed the importance of this initiative, emphasizing the Sharks' commitment to supporting the communities that have long supported them. He stated, “Today is very important for us as The Sharks. We are showing support for our communities and giving back to two organisations because I feel like KZN as a whole has shown us support for the Sharks brand.”
A Community-Centric Approach
SPAR's Acting Retail Operations Executive, Sydney Dubazane, echoed Fassi's sentiments, highlighting the company's dedication to uplifting the community through fun and impactful events. She remarked on the ongoing collaborations with Gozololo and how vital these initiatives are, especially during the festive season, when many families face increased economic pressures.
Novashni Chetty, Chief Operating Officer at The Sharks, added, “For The Sharks, everything centres around community. We pride ourselves on being a beacon of hope and support, especially during a time when joy and generosity are paramount.” This sentiment resonated well with spectators and participants alike, reinforcing the notion that sharing joy and spreading goodwill is just as essential as on-field performance.
Measurable Impact: A Trolley Full of Goodwill
After the frenetic dash, the contribution from both SPAR and the Sharks translated into measurable relief for those in need. The players’ combined efforts yielded an impressive trolley value of R28,683 for The Robin Hood Foundation and R26,000 for Gozololo Centre for Children. Sizwe Mvusi, the Administrator of Gozololo, expressed his heartfelt gratitude, stating, “It means a lot to us, bringing joy to our small kids at the centre. We are so grateful for the gesture and the donation that we have received.”
Spreading Holiday Cheer
As the holiday season approaches, acts of kindness like this trolley dash serve as crucial reminders of the importance of community support. Charlotte Edgar from The Robin Hood Foundation emphasized the difference such contributions make, declaring, “Thanks to this initiative, we can assemble 400 goodie bags for Christmas, literally changing lives for those we support.”
The festive trolley dash not only showcased the unity between professional athletes and their community but underlined how impactful charitable initiatives can be in fostering hope and joy during the holiday season.
