On July 18, 2025, BASF South Africa joined forces with local non-profits and volunteers in a concerted effort to honor Nelson Mandela’s legacy through meaningful community service. This year’s Nelson Mandela Day initiative saw over 50 BASF employees participate in a variety of uplifting projects across Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal, showcasing the profound impact of corporate responsibility on community development.
As part of the efforts, volunteers worked tirelessly to transform the surroundings of Corinthians Africa and Horizon Farm Trust, two non-profit organizations dedicated to community upliftment. The activities included clearing, cultivating, and replanting community gardens aimed at creating sustainable food sources for local residents. According to Devan Govender, Managing Director of BASF’s Agricultural Specialties, “At BASF, we believe that sustainability starts at the grassroots. Supporting food security while revamping community gardens is one of the ways we can honor Mandela’s legacy.”

Our partnership with BASF allows us to use our products for purpose — brightening lives and building community.” Similarly, Jack Msibi, the CEO of Corinthians Africa, reflected on the collaborative efforts: “Working alongside BASF and Kansai Plascon has been a powerful reminder of what collaboration can achieve.”

The culmination of the day’s efforts was highlighted by a friendly blind soccer match between BASF employees and the local community. This event not only fostered camaraderie but emphasized the spirit of inclusion, central to Mandela's values. As volunteers shared a meal with residents at Corinthians Africa, the gathering turned into a joyous celebration of resilience, unity, and the positive outcomes of giving back. Sibonakaliso Shabangu, Head of Human Resources and Business Services in Africa, stated, “This collaboration is more than just a day of service; it symbolizes our commitment to a brighter future for the communities we serve.”
